Frequently Asked Questions
All learner riders with a licence since 1st September 1997, who wish to ride a moped or light motorcycle must complete the Compulsory Basic Training course (CBT). Also, if you have been disqualified from riding a heavy motorcycle, you must take a CBT course if you want to renew your licence.
It is a good idea to take the motorcycle theory test before your CBT but at the moment it is not compulsory. Later in the year the law will be changing so that the theory test will have to be passed with DVS before you can take your CBT course.
The course is specifically designed for novice riders to provide them with the machine handling, road awareness and safety procedures necessary for safe riding. You don’t have to have had any previous experience. It may take further modules of training to obtain your CBT certificate at additional cost.
No. If you are riding with a UK, or Guernsey CBT certificate you are riding illegally.
Clothing
Please be aware that your clothing must meet a minimum standard to ensure you are properly protected whist undertaking training with us. If you attend training and are not suitably dressed you will not be allowed to complete the training and will need to re-book.
Please refer to our FAQ’s page for more information. If you have any questions or require clarification please contact us. As a general guide the following is an indication of the minimum level of clothing that is acceptable:
- Motorcycle boots or sturdy footwear, that provide support and ankle protection.
- Leather/Textile motorcycle trousers or heavy denim trousers.
- Leather/Textile motorcycle jacket or heavy denim jacket with several layers underneath.
- Motorcycle gloves.
- Lightweight training shoes, canvas basket ball trainers/boat shoes.
- Any form of clothing with areas of exposed skin i.e. skirts or shorts.
- Tight fitting leggings/jeggings etc.
- A shell suit or lightweight tracksuit.
- Ripped jeans/trousers.
- Lightweight fleece or hoody.
- No gloves or ski gloves.
Motorcycle Helmet
There’s much more to buying a helmet than choosing the colour or style that you like! Firstly the helmet must meet UNECE Regulation 22.05 standards. We strongly recommend that you never purchase a second hand helmet or order from a website! You really need to try on a few helmets from different manufacturers to find what fits best.
The UK Government launched the SHARP Helmet Safety Scheme website where you can see the safety ratings for helmets as well as great advice.
We do not have any foreign language instructors at the Jersey School of Motorcycling. It is therefore important that you have a reasonable standard of English and are able to understand what the Instructors are teaching you to be able to complete the course.
You can book via our website or at www.dvs.gov.je Hard copy forms are available from your Parish Halls, all Motorcycle Dealers or the Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) at La Collette.
Hard copy forms must be posted to the address provided with the required fee. Your training date and information pack will be sent to you a few days later.
£153.00. This is non-refundable unless a valid doctor’s certificate is produced. If you arrive late, do not turn up for your course, fail the eyesight test or due to a faulty or unroadworthy machine cannot start the course, then a further fee of £153.00 will be charged before a new course date is issued. You have the opportunity to advise us of your availability when you complete the application form however, if you wish to change your date you must advise us no later than the Tuesday before the weekend of your date. A small administration charge of £5.00 will be charged.
The course will last approximately 7 hours and start at either 8.00am; 8.30am; 10.30am or 11.00am (you must arrive at least 20 minutes before the start fo your course to all for registration and bikes to be checked).
Any student who is deemed to be in the at risk/vulnerable groups should seek medical advice before attending CBT training. This includes persons who have pre-existing medical conditions such as compromised immune systems, cardiac problems, lung disease, diabetes or who fall within in certain age categories. For more information regarding these categories please go to the Government of Jersey website -> HERE.
The JSM will be requesting any students who have shown any symptoms of Covid 19 in the preceding 14 days prior to their CBT to not attend and to reschedule their dates until they have recovered or have received a negative Covid-19 test diagnosis.
Students attending will be asked during the booking in procedure if they have exhibited any symptoms during the last 14 days. Any student attending the course who exhibit symptoms such as coughs, sneezing or show signs of fever will be asked to leave the premises and will have to rescheduled to a date when they have recovered or who have received a negative Covid-19 test result.
